Welcome Try The Pie to Get Better Records! Listen to their first new song in 7 years, New Dust, now!!

Led by the self-taught San Jose-based Bean Tupou (they/them), Try the Pie was formed in 2006 and draws upon a Tongan-American and a Bay Area punk background to piece impromptu harmony, poetic imagery, soft guitar melodies, dissonance, and noise. These elements are used to create a sonic collage-work to provide vivid storytelling. The band has since grown to include Nick Lopez (he/him, Ugly Winner) on drums, Bailey Lupo (they/them, Scowl) on bass, and Laine Barriga (they/them, My Friend, Oka Sun) on guitar. Most of lead singer Tupou’s music is based heavily on mixing present and past experiences with both country, indie and Polynesian-influenced songwriting, inherited histories, and oral storytelling of a poetic nature.

Try The Pie is kicking off their signing to Philadephia-based queer and trans-owned indie label Get Better Records with the release of single "New Dust."
Is the fear of death just an unrealistic sense of control? In "New Dust," Bean Tupou lays bare thoughts on the end of life. The core rhythm is a pulsing heartbeat, one you might feel beating against your chest in times of crisis. The song sets the scene around a fire—a blaze burning so bright that nothing could possibly put it out. But just like the wildfire promise of youth, the end lies just beyond the horizon, eclipsed in ash. "New Dust" sits somewhere between a pocket-sized sermon and a fleeting thought one might have as an aftershock to grief. "The sensation of control you crave and then attain," Tupou sings, "…throw it all away."
