        Dazey and the Scouts
Home / Dazey and the Scouts / get better records / Page 1 of 1

Dazey and the Scouts began in 2015 in a Berklee College of Music dorm room. Vocalist and guitarist Lea Jaffe and Brennan Wedl, the singer-songwriter-shredder that lived a few rooms down the hall, became close friends over bubble tea and smuggled bottles of cheap wine. Once a few funny songs came together, including a few Jaffe wrote in high school, Wedl introduced Otto Klammer (at the time her trainer at the college radio station) as the new bassist. The three asked their friend Austin Corona, a laid back California boy in way too many bands already, to join as well. In winter 2016, the Scouts played their first show in Cambridge with a minivan full of props and stage decorations, haunted dolls and Girl Scout sashes.

In early 2017, the Scouts recorded and self-released Maggot, their one and only album (and yes, it is just a “short ass album” and not an EP) with Sasha Stroud of Artifact Audio at The Record Company in Boston. It blended irreverent punk with surf-rock and girl-group harmonies, riot grrrl energy without any TERFy garbage, splashes of dream pop and math rock and spoken word. It was a living scrapbook of their active influences, both the classics and the classmates. Shortly after this release, Corona moved out west to pursue production and his solo project Lilacs.; he was replaced by Jack Whelan, who at the time was drumming in DENT (a unique metal group of Berklee upperclassmen that had a vice grip on the love and adoration of the baby Scouts). The album was well-received in the local scene and the Scouts continued to frolic from basement to basement in Allston, and occasionally Cambridge (as a treat) for a couple years.

The Scouts played their last official show opening for Palehound in March of 2018 and went their separate ways amicably, as life had pulled them in vastly different directions. Wedl moseyed on down to Nashville and began releasing ethereal folk-rock music under her own name. Klammer remained in Boston, playing with several other projects (Dump Him and Prior Panic to name a few) and co-opening their own studio, Entropy Tether Studios, where they could let their synth-god fly free. Jaffe skulked miserably into the world of heavier music, jumping in alongside a few Boston-area black metal and doom bands before moving to Brooklyn; mostly notably, this includes joining Whelan’s blackgaze project Non- as a guitarist, and banjoing for the NYC chapter of noise-bluegrass franchise Bug Fight. And so the book of life tenderly closed on Dazey and the Scouts...

...At least, until some point in the first season of a certain global pandemic when the Scouts began to see a strange uptick in Spotify listeners and Instagram followers. Apparently, the algorithm had worked Maggot into the lives of hundreds of thousands of new listeners, most of them young women and queer high schoolers who resonated with the comically vulgar and confessional nature of the Scouts’ lyrics. Songs like “Wet” and “Nice Nice” became the wellspring of thousands of Tik Tok lipsyncs and cosplays while “Sweet Cis Teen” became a rallying call for a new generation of LGBTQ+ teens coming to terms with their identities. A self-released vinyl pressing of 300 copies of the album sold out almost immediately in February 2021, making their sole offering allegedly (according to the internet) among the most popular queercore releases of all time (allegedly).

The band will be reuniting for one night only at Elsewhere Hall in Brooklyn for a sold out night of debauchery and sin.

Dazey and the Scouts has absolutely no idea what happens next, but they sure do love their fans and they sure are happy to be here.
